If You Want a Job Tomorrow, Cultivate Your Career Today

I just completed a search for a new job. In these economic times, finding a job can be daunting, even in the software industry, which has fared better than most. (Today, it was announced that the official unemployment rate in the U.S. is 10.2%, the highest level in 25 years.) Despite these obstacles, this was the easiest and most rewarding job search of my career.

Thank you, Rails

It’s fashionable, or perhaps inevitable, for tech communities to trash their competition. The Emacs folks like to mock vi users; Windows folk look down on us Mac users (and Linux users mock us both); and everyone likes to mock PHP despite PHP’s dominance in the web world. We geeks make arguing over minor technical points into a kind of art.

This is all pretty understandable: it’s easy to define community in terms of what we’re not. A common enemy focuses and drives us. Competition can take a positive form: when it’s friendly and constructive both communities benefit.

To make JavaScript programming easier, Google has released its set of Closure Tools for JavaScript.

Testing and constructors

One of the pillars of design for testability, which is listed also in the Google guide for code reviewers, is to have constructors that do not contain logic or method calls. I will explain the reasons behind this choice with an example, but let me say that to reduce dependencies it is natural for a class to avoid making assumptions on the external environment, performing things like creating new objects. Separating the business responsibility of a class from the one of wiring itself to other objects is necessary.

Essential CSS/HTML Lists Styling Techniques

Certain elements in HTML lend themselves to many situations when marking up a website, one of the more useful of these elements is the HTML list. Using lists, a developer can markup horizontal navigation, dropdown navigation, a list of links, and even scrolling content panels (with the help of Javascript). These features can help developers build new sites and applications as well as integrate new content into existing applications.

Mobile Market Going Open Source?

At this year's GSMA Mobile World Congress, 3 ½ hours were devoted to the topic of "Mobilizing Open Source", which was no doubt spurred in part by the increasing attention Google's open-source mobile operating system, Android, has drawn.
Maven 3.x: Paving the desire lines — Part One

With Maven 3.x we have made our best attempt to listen users, find out what they need and want, and make reasonable preparations and plans to fix the problems, implement useful features, and create the integration points for working properly with third party systems like Nexus and Hudson. While there have been many new feature requests — and we have many new features done or in the works — the number one concern is backward compatibility. Maven 3.x makes an ardent attempt to be 100% backward compatible with Maven 2.x. All your Maven 2.x builds should work out of the box using 3.x without change to your projects. We simply can’t cause pain to the existing user base. We are very cognizant that even small changes can have a huge impact and so we have tried achieve complete Maven 2.x fidelity with Maven 3.x.
